Cotton Quilt

Removing the bad smell of cotton quilts?

My friend has a cotton quilt that was made in China. She says she has a bad smell to it. It was washed several times, but the smell is still there. Could it be batting or maybe chemicals from China? How Can I remove this smell? Thank you in advance.
