How do I adjust the tension of the coil on my sewing machine?

I am trying to finish Christmas presents for my nieces and nephews, Today, my sewing machine has gone wacko. I make cross-hatch quilting and sewing with stitches in both direct and through decorative multiple layers of fabric and batting (Warm-and-natural, which is quite thin).
