Rag Quilt
Forty years ago, when I started my career with all edges polished marble is hand made. The work today is like is done entirely by machine, but there are cases where hand polishing would be a useful skill to know.
Traditionally, the edge polishing was considered a semi-independent professional specialty. One or all of these would be used wet or dry, just for the final gloss.
The advantage most obvious hand polished, this process does not create clouds of dust as the work is done wet, which means that, unlike the polishing machine dry, there was little health risk to the polishers. The quality of the varnish finish was also superior to machine polishing, leaving a higher brightness, small ledges and a flat surface.
However, the process, polishing by hand is slow and laborious serious. Edge polishing machine is much faster, and within three or four years the appearance of edge grinding machines of the art of hand-polished marble had disappeared.
